My first Opinel No. 7 is a pocket knife with rounded stainless steel blade. The wood is varnished and can be locked when opened and when closed to make it safe for kids to use. The blade is sharp but because of the rounded tip safer to use.
Our girls got their first Opinel at the age of six and they still use it a lot. They carve wood, or cut flowers or use it on a picnic.
We felt that six was a good age to start using a sharper knife and teach them how to use it properly. But age does not always defines if a child is ready for it, some kids will ask for it at a younger age and some maybe need a bit more time. But it is a special gift which both our girls cherish and handle with respect.
As you can see on one of the photo's I burnt the name of my daughter in the knife, if you would like your Opinel engraved please let me know, I would love to make yours extra special too.
